Are you concerned that it’s not effective or that it doesn’t work? Or are you just on the fence about taking that first step?
We totally understand and want to take a minute to address five common myths and misconceptions about taking virtual martial arts classes!
Keep in mind that, to achieve any type of training, whether it is in-person or virtual, whether you are training recreationally or professionally, it’s important to have a positive mindset, proper discipline, and a bit of flexibility. We are not able to train in person right now, so we are left with two choices: train virtually or not train at all. As a martial artist, my attitude is that I will train anywhere at any time. With the mindset of a champion, we adapt, overcome, and come out of this stronger than ever.
MYTH #1: Online training is not effective.
FALSE! There are so many benefits to training online. You can hone your techniques by practicing alongside your instructors and fellow classmates. You receive live feedback from instructors who bring positive, high energy to each and every class. And you engage and develop the same muscles that you would in an in-person class. By staying active and consistent with virtual classes, you will not only improve the technical aspect of your art, but you will also be ready to hit the mats running when in-person classes become available.
All we ask is that you try out a few virtual classes. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
MYTH #2: I need a super expensive computer or iPad with the fastest Wifi available so that I can connect the stream to my 80″ 4K tv.
FALSE! It would be nice to have all of this, but you can log in and follow along to our Zoom classes with any laptop, desktop, iPad, or phone. The internet on our end has high speeds to prevent as much lag as possible, and our camera setup is state-of-the-art to bring you as clear and sharp of a stream as possible.
MYTH #3: I need a heavy bag, an expensive grappling dummy, fancy mats, and a ton of open space.
FALSE! While all of this would be great to have, you don’t need it. Our virtual classes are designed for students that are training on their own at home with no equipment. We just ask that you have a soft rug or good yoga mat to train on, and that you clear a small area of all hazardous obstacles. We have also created a YouTube video for a DIY grappling dummy that you can assemble at home with your Gi and some clothing.
MYTH #4: People are going to judge my messy home.
FALSE! It’s ok. We are all in various stages of “messiness” at home right now. We are not here to judge, and we are really just looking at your technique so that we can provide feedback. Also, there are now a ton of Zoom backgrounds available that will turn your workout area into any place in the world!
MYTH #5: I can just go on YouTube and take pre-recorded martial arts classes for free. Isn’t that the same thing as your virtual martial arts classes?
FALSE! Sure, any one can take free pre-recorded classes online for free. But there is a huge difference between our live virtual classes and pre-recorded classes available online for free. Our instructors actually care about your progress. They are constantly correcting, encouraging, and providing feedback in real-time during our live interactive classes. And class attendance also counts towards stripes, belts, and level testing.
We get it. Training in person is way better than training online, and our instructors would rather see our students in person. But right now, it’s our only option.
So, what do you have to lose? Try us out online, and you will be ready to hit the mats running when we are ready to start in-person classes again.
